WELCOME TO WALA CONNECTIONS

We are a First Nations dance organisation fusing cultural and contemporary dance and storytelling.
Our purpose is to inspire deeper connections to Aboriginal lands and culture and to nurture healing and creative expression through the power of dance.

Based in Narrm (Melbourne, Aus), Wala Connections provides dance & movement workshops and cultural contemporary dance performances nationally with the Boonwurrung Ngargee Dance Group, a program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young women to connect to culture and Country through dance.

We are proud to have worked with local councils, creative & arts organisations, early learning centres, primary & secondary schools, Aboriginal led and controlled organisations and to have danced for many events and festivals including the AFLW, Museums Victoria, Aus Dance, St.Kilda Festival & Thrive Multcultural Women's Festival.

FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR
THARA BROWN

Thara Brown is an experienced trained dancer, secondary school teacher and program manager who has worked extensively across the arts, education and community sectors. Her maternal connections to Yorta Yorta woka (Barmah, Victoria) drives her passion for community & culture, birthing Wala Connections in 2019 to provide opportunities for cultural connection and expression through dance.

Thara has danced professionally, touring for First Nations musicians, dancing at Festivals, for music videos and in community, and has developed dance workshops and programs for community groups, schools and events. She continues to be inspired by dance’s ability to unite, heal, empower and keep stories and culture alive through generations.

Living on the lands of the Kulin Nation, Thara works closely with Boonwurrung Elder N’arweet Carolyn Briggs and traditional owners to design and deliver the Boonwurrung Ngargee Dance Program, working to share and develop Boonwurrung and young people’s own stories through cultural and contemporary dance, choreographing, creating music and managing performance and development opportunities for young First Nations artists.
